Tree hugger

It's been a fairly uneventful week, so I thought I'd just post a couple of designs from the past year. Here's another version of my "Garden Bench", the combination bench and planter.

The GARDEN BENCH II
The previous version has a CMU base, while this base is a custom cast concrete. More original, but of course more work, and therefore more time consuming and more expensive. I suppose the key word is "more". I should've put plants in this rendering.

The IDEA STATION
Inspired by the freestanding classroom chalkboard. This one has various shelving, cubbys, and storage on the sides for plans or other long things. One side is chalk, the other side (not pictured) is dry erase with a foot of cork on each side to pin inspirational photos or other sketches. Despite my frequent laptop use, I'm still a big proponent of analog design. I have yet to build one of these things, but I look forward to having a couple of these for my co-workers and I to roll around our workshop.

SOFA One
(a better name to come)

Although I do very little metal work, and no upholstery, it often appears in my designs. Not much to say about this one. I would point out the inspiration, because I think it's fun to know how a persons ideas tie into things historically. Unfortunately, as a struggling and unknown designer my insecurities keep me from revealing things that I feel might give a more well funded designer a (table) leg up.

ASDF Shelves
A mix of wood and modular shelving brackets. My typical combination of organic shapes and materials (the wood part) with uniform industrial parts (the metal brackets).

This is a good representation of one of my personal design goals: To create a cohesive blend of nature and industrialized elements. I think it's important to recognize the natural beauty and balance of organic materials, and at the same time, starting with The Wheel, Man has created some pretty bad-ass stuff. Good job, Man!

In unrelated news, I saved a tree this week. I dropped by my condo on Thursday to find that a pretty decent sized palm near my door had been removed by the gardeners. Although I was sad to see it gone, it did seem like it had overgrown it's space. Then I saw the whole thing, roots intact, in a pile of branches in the parking lot. I immediately called my sister-in-law, Suzy, who loves tropical plants. I ended up putting the roots in a garbage bag with palm fertilizer, and taking it to her house and replanting it. As I loaded it into the back of the station wagon (I was worried the wind would beat it up in the back of my pickup), I thot of the fantastic scene in Harold and Maude when Maude saves the tree.

Treehouse or Deck?

I guess this is technically a deck, because A), it is not an enclosed structure, and B) it is not supported by the tree in any way. In fact, there is no attachment by way of any screw or nail penetrating the tree. The spool table for instance, is attached to the trunk via a large adjustable clamp made from 2x4's and all-thread bolts. But back to my original point...We're still calling this The Tree House.

Some have asked why the flat panels in the front and back? Since this treehouse is all about view, I wanted a railing that would be open and compliment the horizon, but every treehouse/fort needs a parapet to avoid the possible onslaught from Super-Soakers and water balloons.

This thing's crazy strong. About 10 feet up at the lowest corner, but no wiggle when you're up there. I painted the posts and the bracing underneath a darker color so that they blend in with the surrounding foliage. From down the street it looks like the Mothership hovering in the trees.

Did I mention we built this from 99% re-used lumber? Even a lot of the paint and hardware is leftover from other projects. The final colors, the white and light gray of the deck match the house below.

We terraced the slope with old railroad ties. It also helps create paths and adds dimension to the play area underneath.

Here's a novel way to make the most of bathroom storage. This client wanted a place to put their scale when not in use.

I'm sure I'm not the first to think of this, but I haven't seen it done before.

The drawer is discretely hidden in the toe-kick, and uses a special drawer slide that opens when you push it, so that you don't need to reach under the toe kick, or attach a visible pull.

This seems like as good a time as any to mention the fact that for several months I've been secretly inserting links to songs via Youtube in my text. Sometimes the links are more obvious than others. Just scroll over the text and you're bound to find something (like right here).

I try to find songs that have some connection to my blog, and usually it's just some kind of bad pun. As many of you know, I have thousands of records, which I actually listen to, and have done a pretty good job of subconsciously cataloging. One of the side effects of this is that at any given moment, whatever kind of input the world is giving me, my brain is pulling up a lyric or song title. I have to resist turning every word into a different link.

What I did on my Winter Vacation

My sister moved to Saint Helena last year. We managed to get up there for a couple of weekends in December. The first weekend I was up there my niece, Lilli, started telling me about a project she had to do. She was studying the Egyptians, and had to do some kind of presentation about something she had learned.

I could tell she was hoping I'd give her a hand, so I took her to the art store, got some supplies and we went to work on a models of two different types of Egyptian dwellings. The one we're working on in these pictures is for the upper class. We built another, smaller one that represented the regular folk.

We went on a walk, and gathered moss and small twigs to make trees and bushes for the diorama.

...Then back to the shop to wrap up some "Four Aces Record Frames" before the holiday.

We had a couple more free days so we built a ladder and staircase for the tree house at my father-in-law's. A couple more details and a fresh coat of paint and we'll be ready for final photos.

Last week my Sister came down to Ventura for a visit. Here's a picture of my lovely wife and niece.

New years day, California style. It was in the mid-70's.

Merry Christmas Everybody!

The end of the year is turning into one of the busiest ever for Able and Baker.

Here's one of our most recent projects: A complete top-to-bottom bathroom remodel that we designed and built.

We re-did everything you see, including windows, electrical, plumbing, custom cabinets and vanity. All of the plumbing fixtures were provided by our neighbors at Vic's Plumbing.

Most of it is pretty straight-forward stuff, but like most of our work, there are a couple of unique features. As you can see in the above photo, we put a small fan near the ceiling for a little extra ventilation, with the switch conveniently located above the counter.

The client was trying to reduce clutter on the floor, which led to another cool feature (which can't be seen in the photos unfortunately). We put their bath scale in a discreet drawer concealed in the cabinet toe-kick. It has a unique drawer glide that opens when you push it, eliminating the need for a traditional drawer pull.

In a seemingly unrelated post, I had the strangest dream the other night.

I was at my friend Tristen's old house in the country. They always had a bunch of animals out there, like dogs, horses and peacocks. So it wasn't strange when, in my dream, I looked out the window and saw a dozen or so really furry black cats. What was strange however, was that about half of them were wearing prescription glasses. The same kind Julie Kotter wore on Welcome Back Kotter.
I woke up from the dream laughing. Then I got to thinking, "You know, you never see animals with prescription glasses." Then it occurred to me that there probably aren't even optometrist vets. Well, one thing led to another, and I created the Eye Chart For Cats.

So for all you cat lovers out there, here is the first step towards better feline vision care.

Able And Baker at the Emmys

I make so much stuff...you have know idea. If I live to be 500 I won't have enough time to bust out all of my ideas. It's frustrating. In the meantime, I'll keep knocking out the simple ones.

Made from salvaged redwood, and some standard 16"x16" CMU pilaster blocks.
Pretty comfy, plus plants. And what could be greener than a plant? Dave maybe.

The Treehouse in Progress

In my "spare" time, I'm usually building something. This past winter my Father-in-law told me he wanted to build a treehouse "for the little guys", referring to my 3 nephews, David, Richard, and Luke.
By now, we all know this is part of his M.O. When he say's it's for "the little guys", such as, "the little guys want ice cream", or "the little guys want a cup coffee", I have a feeling he's acting on their behalf, and not necessarily with their knowledge.
He can never get high enough on his property to see far enough across the valley, and it really is a good view. And besides that, who wouldn't want a treehouse?

Anyhow, we got started in cooler weather, and I insisted that if I were going to build this thing that I had help. Steve jumped in, and so did Rich.

The tree house is located on the highest point on his property, which sits on the western edge of the Conejo Valley.

Day 3, (but 3 months into the project) I began the railing. I think this will be one of the cooler details when it's done. The railing is tilted out about 10 degrees to make the tree house feel a little bigger.

Architectural Foundation and Guitars

Last Friday evening we had the honor of attending (and sponsoring) this years presentation of the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara's Architectural Scholarships. The awards were given to several young deserving students to help further their architectural education. I hope they design some cool stuff.

I really wish I had "before" photos of this place. It used to be a nice 80's remodel with carpet and country blue wallpaper. A lot of brass.
The first time I entered I swear I heard the ghost of Dolly Parton singing "9 to 5"

Record Store Day

I guess I should've mentioned this earlier. Not that it would've changed anything, but today, April 16th, is the official Record Store Day.
I suggest you celebrate by buying my new 4 ACES RECORD FRAME!, or the previously mentioned LP Room Divider.

Since we're on the subject, I pulled up these images of my custom 45 Adaptors, for all those guys that lost the one that came with their 1200's. They were made by fellow bad-ass Al Harpham in beautiful downtown Fresno California. I did his logo too (the chick on the scooter), which is way too small on his website.

Note the excellent packaging, which includes the expertly drawn self-portrait which I, well... drew of myself.

On the back of the packaging, I wrote my manifesto. If I ever find it again I might reprint it here.
Fortunately, and unfortunately, the first run sold out quickly, and we never did another.

Beverly Hills Cops

I'm so behind. That should be the title of my book. This show came and went already, and I never mentioned it. Anyhow, I had my room divider in this cool show in Beverly Hills, sponsored by EcoFirstArt, Elle Decor Magazine, and Country Floors. There was some great stuff.

Incidently, a funny thing happened on the way to pick up my room divider.

I'm driving through Beverly Hills, minding my own business, when all of the sudden this cop (in a truck bigger than mine) tries to squeeze between me and the curb to make a right turn. Apparently he's usually on a bike because he didn't make it.
BAM!!... Mirror tag.
I look over to see a genuinely shocked cop, giving me the "Are You Okay?" gesture. I couldn't help but laugh, and I waved him on, with the "I'm Okay" gesture.
He gestured back "I'm pulling over".
I couldn't believe it. I'd been waiting for this moment since I passed my first driving test. We pulled around the corner and to the curb. I sat in my truck as the officer approached my door.

"License and Registration please", I said. He laughed, thankfully.

"Are you Okay?", he said, as his partner looked over my broken mirror.
"I'm fine", (still laughing a little) "and my mirror was already broken."
"Are you sure? Do you want somebody to take a look at this?" he asked.
"No. Don't worry about it. I'm gonna let you off with a warning this time." He laughed again.
Then I said, "Here's what you can do... Remember me. Remember my truck. If something ever goes down in Beverly Hills, and I need help, I'm calling you."
He laughed again, and said "You got it."

Cops are so much better in my adult life, now that I wear grown-up clothes and I no longer look like I'm up to something (which I'm not).

Vanity. You probly think this blog is about you.

I tried a lot of different vanity designs for this job, a classic Mid-Century Modern home. The client wanted a vanity that reminded them of a piece of Mid-Century Modern furniture, like a table or desk. My initial designs were heavily influenced by existing pieces, but as I continued to shape the vanity, my own style began to show.

So here's a step-by-step of the final evolution. There were many pieces that came before these, but we'll start at the point when I began to like the direction things were going. The earlier renditions may still be usable for another job.

Version 6.1 (the numbers aren't totally sequential)
This is probably the most straightforward, with a little Deco influence. The sinks and faucets had already been purchased, and the vanity had to fit between the tub and a wall, so the dimensions were relatively fixed.

Version 1.4
I like incorporating various materials, especially metal. This one leans casually against the wall. I could imagine it smoking a cigarette.

This is the final evolution. Of these, it's hard to say which is my favorite.

No doors, no cabinet sides.
With the cabinet open, it reveals the box framework that wraps the whole unit. As you can see, there are 2 wooden "straps" that appear to hang the cabinet and drawers from the counter top.

Version 1.8.4
No back, Metal frame
The "straps" are more evident here, when made from metal. You can see how the outside vertical straps are connected by a small horizontal beam at the bottom that supports both open cabinets, and the drawers.

Dahlia's Beauty Salon

We just did a little work at the new location for Dahlia's Beauty Salon, which just opened last week.
They seem like real good people, so I thought we'd give them a plug.

They're at 1021 B State Street, in Santa Barbara. It's a little tricky to find at first, because they actually face the parking lot on the backside of the building, just outside of Saks Fifth Avenue. If you see the SUBWAY on State Street near Figueroa, just make you're way around to the back. There's plenty of parking, and a nice sunny patio.

It's been months since my last entry. You may think it's because I haven't been busy, and therefore have nothing to say. Quite the opposite. In fact, too busy to write.
I started to compose my last entry in December, got hung-up on editing, and dropped the ball. I intended to begin sharing excerpts from my advice book "Always Carry A Sharpie", which I've been picking away at over the last couple of years. Now I'm thinking that it's a work-in-progress, and who cares if it's perfect? So here are a couple of "The Rules", and some completely unrelated photos, just to prove I've been doing something. And by the way, I know the idea of me giving advice to anyone is arrogant and ridiculous, so for now we'll have to assume it's some form of catharsis...

Rule #37 - Who are you to give me advice?  
I used to dismiss just about any advice, because I always felt misunderstood, and didn't trust the people advising me. It seemed like everyone offering me advice had their own agenda. They probably did, but in retrospect, people like my parents and teachers may have had some genuine concern for my well being. But I could never stop asking the question, "How can you tell me how to get there, when you don't know where I'm going?"
 At some point in my life, I began to meet some pretty cool, and successful adults, and somehow, their advice actually meant something. They listened to cool music, understood art. They shared most of the same morals and ethics as the adults I grew up around, but somehow the same things that were important to them were also important to me.
And when they told me "You can have anything you want, if you're willing to work hard for it", I no longer assumed "work hard for it" meant working hard doing something that I didn't want to do. And when that happened, "working hard" meant something new, and my life changed.
 When an accountant stands in front of his BMW and tells you "Someday, you too can have one of these," it might mean something if you're good at math, but not me. No thanks. I'd rather be poor than sit in front of a stack of papers or computer all day. But that's just me. The point is, if you don't like the advice people give you, find somebody you like, and take their advice. But here's the key - Make sure their advice has gotten them somewhere.

  Rule #58 (that's right) - Never make plans or commitments after 11pm or at a bar. If you do, don't be upset if either party fails to commit.  
A shadow can really change how we define things. When you look at the moon do you see a circle or a sphere? When the light goes away we have to fill in the dark space with our own imagination. And some people's imaginations and idea's get pretty grand, especially with a drink or two.  That's all. If it's that important, discuss it again in the morning, when the details are a little more clear and less up to interpretation.

Rule #47 - Turn your fork over when you're done with your plate. 
I don't know where I got this, but I'm pretty sure I didn't make it up. Even if I did, it just seems like one of those things classy people would do. And why should the aristocracy maintain a monopoly on couth?! (You're probably sick of hearing me say that).

You think you know somebody...

Last night I was talking with my Aunt Donna. She's always been one of my favorite people. For much of my childhood she lived on a series of sail boats in Mission Bay, San Diego, and I loved spending summers there. I used to get sea sick, but I might be able to sail because of her.

She's retired from nursing now, living in Fresno, caring for my Grandma (another one of my favorite people).

After the earthquake in Haiti, she told us she was going to travel down there with a group of doctors. She did, and when she returned, told us about the devastation, and how wonderful the people were, and that she intended to go back.

It's several months later now, and she's returned to Haiti multiple times. Last night, as she was telling us about her latest trip, she mentioned that we could see photos on her website. "What website?"
"My website, Haiti-orphanage.org".

Now I've been to her website, and read every word. It's a little bit hard to read. It takes me out of my warm home, away from my family, and makes me question the things I take for granted. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about it yet, but as for you, I'd encourage you to go to her website, read her story, and make a donation. As you can see, she's doing good stuff with the money.

I meant to mention this before the Unique LA Show, which I also meant to mention. We've been getting some pretty decent free publicity, or press, as it is sometimes called.

I think we're on to something.

We keep knocking out projects and products, but I seem too busy working to talk about it.
I just designed a multilevel, 1200 square foot deck, complete with small 2 story "Castle", which I look forward to starting. We're ordering the stone for the castle and garden walls tomorrow. The stone is quarried somewhere near Tahoe, I think.
I also just designed a cool kitchen which I hope to start after the new year. Small, but unique. I'll post the pictures when they're a little more fine tuned.
Off to Fresno this weekend to celebrate Eric Burke's 40th. Happy Birthday Eric!

And I certainly can't forget my favorite niece, Lilli, who turns 11 the same day. Unfortunately, I have to wait a week to celebrate her birthday.

Like a lot of guys, I like Star Wars (not the new ones, of course). And I was just thinking about how the bad-asses of the film, the Jedi, get to wear bathrobes and slippers all day. I'm sure they're not ordinary JC Penney bathrobes, but still, I think that's one of the ways you know you've made it. I can only imagine what it would be like to show up to work in a bathrobe. Any guy that works in a bathrobe probably has an ottoman in his office.
Monks and priests, and guys that hand out diplomas get to wear bathrobes to work too. It must be nice. I wonder if they had that day when they thought to themselves, "This is the last time I ever have to wear pants". Or maybe the robe thing happened so naturally that one day the Pope thought, "Jesus, it's been years since I've worn a pair of pants."
I usually put on a pair of sweat pants when I get home from work, but I'm not trying to kid myself by puttin' on a robe.

The new ABLE And BAKER design studio is up and running in Ventura, and we've already managed to crank out several cool projects, with several more on the horizon.

We've had more work than expected, and haven't had time to work on our little art/furniture gallery. As a result, we're postponing the opening date to mid October. When we pick a real date, we'll buy a case of the finest Charles Shaw and let you know.

In an effort to get more of my personal creations out there, I've been working evenings and weekends (which is pretty much my M.O. anyway). I recently whipped out this cool table.

I'm a big fan of institutional furniture, which is typically built to take some abuse. This table includes some classic elements from Ernie Pyle Elementary School classroom furniture, including high-density 13 ply maple, high-pressure laminate table top, and steel tubing. Of course, there's more to it, including the obvious connections to mid-century modern, and sci-fi design. The sci-fi influence is really a result of looking to the future of design, rather than trying to capture elements of sci-fi specifically.

I don't know a lot about Roosevelt's WPA program but it sure seems cool.

This past Saturday we did one of those things you plan on doing before you move, but never do. There's a million great things to see in the Bay Area, but as permanent residents, we've barely taken the time to be tourists. This weekend we finally hit Coit Tower. I really got into the murals in the lobby. It took 26 artists 6 months. I like how consistent their work is, yet it's easy to see that the work was created by different artists. Different brush strokes, different line styles, differently shaped faces.

In one of the little paragraphs that described the history of the work, they mentioned that some of the work had to be changed because of some potentially pro-communist imagery.

It seems so funny to think of those times. Those cold war James Bond & various war movies where the Commies were our enemies. There should be a VH1 special - "The Commies. Where are they now?". I guess they traded in those big furry hats for turbans.

It's nice that we haven't had to face more than one major enemy at a time in the last 60 years. We're lucky the Taliban & the communists never hooked up.

Anyhow, you should check out the 2000 Tim Robbins film "Cradle Will Rock". It's a great film, and a good commentary on how our fear of the Red Scare affected the WPA Theatre Project, as well as Diego Rivera's mural in Rockefeller Center.

Ryan's Yo-Yo's

I've known Ryan Williams 15 years or so, from my Fresno California days. A couple of months ago, when we came over to his house to hang out, he said, excitedly, "I've got something to show you."
He ducked into the hall, but I could still hear him talking, "For years I've been meaning to show you these, and every time you come over, before you show up, I try to remember to bring them out..."

Yo-Yo's.

So here's the story...in brief.
When Ryan was a (younger) boy, he spent a lot of time hanging out with his Grandpa, Walter Cull.

As I remember the story, Ryan and his grandfather were in a toy store one day when young Ryan found a Yo-Yo. His grandfather, dis-satisfied with the plastic yo-yo's quality said he could make a better one, and so he did.

And then another and another.

He collected exotic woods, and created one unique design after another. He made them so well that he began to sell them, and he sold quite a few. Each yo-yo he sold included a little booklet describing the various exotic woods used for making them. But here's the coolest part - He made 2 of every design ; One to sell and one for Ryan.

Now Ryan has this awesome collection.

Average vs. Half-ass vs. Bad-ass

I'm so sick of average stuff. It's everywhere. Particularly architecture. I was at the Dwell On Design show at the LA Convention Center last Friday. There were a couple of cool things (I'll post them later, cuz they deserve it), but for the most part, nothing mind-blowing. But dammit, I'm ready to get my mind blown!
I mean...I get it. There are certain inevitable constraints. The number one constraint is typically budget. I'm familiar with that one. If I had an unlimited budget I'd....well...you'll see.
And the half-ass sucks too. Half-ass is the result of average designers trying to be bad-ass. Jeez this sounds critical and egotistical... but how 'bout this - Anyone wanna take me on? Let's get out the pencil & paper, clay, Legos, papier mache, Lincoln Logs, 2x4's....or lets just grab a stick and find some wet sand and see who can come up with what. I mean, it's not like this is a new idea. Most contemporary designers can't keep up with the Egyptians or Greeks. I'm not saying there isn't any cool stuff out there. There is. And it's MIND BLOWING! But it's rare. And it's the exception to the rule.
Think about it this way: When you're driving around (or riding) take a look at all of the stuff you pass....all of the objects. Take a look at the cars, the mailboxes, the landscaping, but mostly the buildings. There's so many of them. They're everywhere! Everybody's got at least one, but how many of them would qualify as bad-ass? Not enough. That's how many.
Well, anyhow...if you need some examples, here's a guy I like - Art Dyson. There's others of course, but he's the first that comes to mind.
Now let me get some dough together so I can go visually squash some fools.

This-Into-That Stepladder

I was talking with Jim of This Into That (one of our neighbors at the Sawtooth building in Berkeley), and the subject of my stepladder project came up. He invited me into his studio and showed me his most recent acquisition: A stepladder.
I was immediately jealous, and told him that I wish he hadn't shown it to me. Oh well.

Pretty nice, huh?

Jean Prouve Inspired Stepladder

Jonathan Taylor is the designer for one of my current clients in San Francisco. They're having me create all kinds of interesting stuff, and I'm really enjoying working with them. Their latest request is for a rolling stepladder, based on this 1951 design from Jean Prouve. Although many of Jean Prouve's pieces have been mass produced, there doesn't seem to be any reproductions of the stepladder. Our version will differ in many ways. Not only do I want to avoid infringing on anyone else's stuff, but the overall dimensions of the original don't quite suit our client's needs.

Here is the original Jean Prouve Stepladder. After studying it carefully, I decided that it is a nearly perfect design. I rarely draw this conclusion when studying a piece, but when it's good, it's good. So where do we go from perfect? I'm not sure what the client will ultimately want, but I decided to head in a different direction, just to satisfy my own curiosity.

This is my favorite variation so far. It is somewhat inspired by Star Wars, but not really. One of the few things I thot I could actually improve was the shape of the grab rail. I think the original grab rail protrudes a little bit too far, so I held these rails a little closer to the piece. These images don't include wheels (I got lazy). Those who know me may find elements they might consider my "trademark" details, but I won't point them out.

This elevation view shows the streamlined grab rail. Both the grab rail, and the back of the stair treads hold a vertical line.

Here's the cool, and completely superfluous tread detail from the top. The top tread is rectangular, but as they go down, each tread gets deeper, with a graduating arc. The actual standing area remains the same all the way down, but you get this neat effect at the back, which reminds me of some kind of cooling fin, or exoskeleton.

I took the ladder to my Uncle George, who is the retired master fabricator of the Ganshorn family. He liked the original Prouve better than my variations. A practical man, he thot I was "some kind of jack ass" for trying to complicate things "with all those extra curves and corners!" It's hard to argue with practicality.

This week on HOW ITS MADE: Airstream Kitchens

Our Airstream client wanted a minimal place to prepare food. We gave him a small convection oven (microwaves just don't make good food) a fridge with separate freezer, and one of those water boiling electric teapots.
In the following photos, the bulk of the cabinetry is complete, so it's mostly just pictures of us applying the Formica tops.

I doubled up layers of ply, to get a nice 1-1/2" countertop thickness. I created the curves using different types of moulding. The white part is a pretty standard door casing. Clever.

I don't know if this looks easy or not, but It's really a pain bending this stuff and making it stick correctly.

The final touch, the standard plastic trailer molding from Vintage Trailer Supply.

The finished bench, ready to install. What some people don't realize is that beyond the obvious benefits of a bench, it's really just a way to hide the wheel wells. Hence, the shallow depth in the lower portion. I tried to make the most out of every square inch, so I created the small but deep cubbies for books and sketch pads. The owner is an artist, after all.

....And Voila. Ready for appliances. Notice the small opening where the fridge goes (on the right). It's the service access for the hot water heater.

The semi-symmetrical layout turned out pretty good. All these curves are sexy (and a pain-in-the-ass to create).

Pocket Door in the Making

I just saw the most recent issue of Sunset magazine and found someone else that converted an Airstream into an office, so it seemed like an appropriate time to revisit our own recent Airstream project.
After we finished our project, we got a chance to show it a couple of times, and one of the most common questions about the interior was, "Where did you get all of these cabinets, and how did you get it to fit so well?", or "So what part did you do? Did you just find a way to move around the interior and make it fit?"
The simple answer is that we custom fabricated nearly the entire interior (excluding the bathroom sink and tub), and as proof, we thot we would show a few samples of the work in progress, beginning with the interior pocket door.

Everything starts with a template. For this unusual shape, I sacrificed 2 sheets of cheap luan ply.

This place is so dusty.

This is a "Go-bar" table. Kind of an old-fashioned way to keep something flat.
Works great.

A test fitting. Ball bearing rollers (Cheap hardware drives me nuts). Smooove.

The finished installation. This sides all Walnut.

My favorite part is these dope curves on the door jamb. The original door was the width of the bottom half. It couldn't be any wider at the bottom because of the bathroom countertop and tub, as you can kind-of see in this photo. There were also other obstructions which I dealt with cleverly. The result is a 4" wider opening in the top half, which makes it sort-of ergonomic for those of us with arms.

On the lavatory side, the door is maple.

Now that it's gone, and I don't get to see it any more, I kinda forget how bad-ass our work is.

Today is the first day of the rest of my week

Blogging is new for me. What a dumb word, "blog". Crude. I feel a little embarassed everytime I say or type it. I guess it's easier to say than "Digital Online Journal".

Since this is a relatively new experience, I haven't exactly known what thots and experiences were "blog-worthy". So far, I've restricted my entries to things that are specific to construction mostly, since that's my job, and this is linked directly to my business site. But I'm not always doing the most interesting work. At least, not so interesting that I feel the need to document it on a weekly basis.

Then, last night, while eating dinner at Quinn's Lighthouse (my regular spot in the East Bay) it occurred to me that beyond my work, people hiring me (and perhaps others) might be interested in other aspects of my life. After all, it is my cumulative life experience that has helped me to define my opinions and passions, and these are the things that define my work.

So, from now on, I hope my entries create a more well-rounded view of my life, and how I live it. I intend to include my thoughts on design, architecture, art, the way people live, how we treat each other, and anything else worth writing down. I'll also include excerpts from my book-in-progress, "Always Carry A Sharpie" (working title). It's a book of advice and opinions, mostly from me, which makes it the most egotistical thing I've ever done.

For now, I'll just leave you with this: A giant lemon that looks like Grampa Simpson. My Niece brot (brought) it home from her Grandparents lemon tree. The green butter dish in the background is there for scale. Don't say "Gi-normous". We'll look back on that word combo as a mistake.

Cool Skylight and Ceiling in Master Bath

We're doing a remodel on a 1964 Eichler-esque home near Davis, CA. The Master bath is not on an exterior wall, and had no windows. It also had a drop ceiling to house the exhaust fan and electrical. Other rooms in the house had a beautiful knotty-pine T&G ceiling, and we were hoping this would be the case once we removed the drywall ceiling. We were in luck.

We redesigned the ceiling with a new skylight. The large opening lands on the existing 4x12 beams at each end. To support the long sides of the opening, we installed 3x9 glulam beams using Simpson Concealed Joist Ties, so no big metal brackets. We could have used a smaller beam, but the 9" depth gave us the necessary room to install a new exhaust fan.

We designed a custom flashing for the low pitch roof, made by Crown Sheet Metal, in Berkeley.

Since the new skylight was so large, it left little space for central lighting on the ceiling. Instead, we ran the wiring through a channel concealed in the beams, and brought it out through the sides, where we will eventually install custom sconces.

A box was built to house the fan by continuing the new beams to the wall and re-using the T&G removed from the skylight opening for a cohesive look. The T&G was made into a removable panel, allowing access to a junction box and ductwork.

Lights off, and on a rainy day! Before the skylight, it would've been pitch black.

The tub is a Kohler whirlpool, with custom designed tile made in Sausalito at Heath Ceramics

The Airstream Photos You've Been Waiting For!

Our Airstream adventure began one year ago when we received the phone call from Austin, Texas, asking if we'd be interested in the project. The real fun began 6 months later with an unforgettable roadtrip to Las Vegas, New Mexico, to pick up the trailer: A 1968 Airstream Ambassador Twin.

The project was a big endeavor, beginning with a crash course in Airstream Culture and History. Throughout the construction, we met many fun, interesting and enthusiastic people who stopped by out of curiosity, or to offer advice (some of it useful!). We gave a lot of ourselves to the project, but the opportunity to design and build such an exotic piece was a gift in itself.

Please enjoy these photos and descriptions of some of our favorite features.

In Josh's continual attempt to resemble a luxurious space capsule, He created this semi-oval pocket door with the large plexi-glass window. It separates the living/office area from the bathroom while still allowing valuable light to enter.

All of the Airstream's walnut cabinetry and furniture, including these rounded cabinet doors, were built in our Berkeley shop. We designed integrated door pulls for a sleek look, and to limit injuries in this compact space.

One of the few requests our client had, was to swap out the original built-in sofa with something nice and new. An inherent challenge of working in a space with rounded corners is that everything needs to be custom. Most conventional futon beds require side or rear access for set-up, but with our layout that wasn't an option. Josh's solution -- automated, cantilevered bed, powered by a modified garage door motor, and wired to the original Airstream Control Panel! The result is surprisingly smooth and quiet.

One of the design challenges was to make use of the wheel wells. We built cabinets on both sides, which include a pantry and flat-file storage. These built-ins also act as seating areas (a chair on one side, a bench on the other.) Because of the wheel-well depth, the bottom drawers are shallow -- perfect for storing anything from spice jars to paint brushes.

The desk area near the kitchen appliances contains a built-in laptop or iPod input, and offers plenty of room to spread out books, paper, and even a portable microscope, should your journey call for that.

What's that under the globe? It's the Airstream Control Panel (wired to the automated futon!)
Although the Control Panel is original to the Airstream, it was rewired and relocated.

Party ready, the lower section of the wardrobe cabinet houses a Sony sound system and JBL 8" powered sub, part of the great sounding JBL 5.1 speaker system mounted throughout.

The built-in globe is one of our favorite parts. After having the original idea, Josh began the search for the perfect globe. We narrowed it down to a certain brand, size, and era. After several eBay and Flea Market finds, we came across this one, with it's unusual metallic blue water, and limited color scheme. The red arrow and miniature Airstream (a little hard to see in this photo) remain stationary while the globe spins. Finally, we swapped out the original brown receptacle for this "high tech" space station orange one.

Pocket door, open.

When rebuilding the wall, Josh managed to make the the upper half of the opening 4" wider than the original, creating a more ergonomic, and generally cooler shape, All of the wood in the bathroom is maple, as is the other side of the pocket door.

The molded bathroom components and countertop are original to the Airstream, and refinished with durable boat paint. All wood, doors, and lighting are new.

Airstream-inspired pillows! I made these space themed pillows as a little token of our Airstream adventure (they have little rockets, and "5,4,3,2,1 Blast Off!" on them). We received such a positive response to this piece of Space-Travel-fantastic, we've decided to make more -- look for them soon in our Shop!

This overhead cabinet is one of the few original components that remained completely untouched, and dictated our use of Walnut throughout. It originally housed the Airstream's Motorola stereo system, and now conceals 2 JBL speakers.

Fully functional bathroom, including a shower and kid-sized tub.

Convection Oven, Refrigerator and Freezer, and shot of the "Tommorowland" inspired paint-scheme.

New halogen lighting throughout, Maple veneer flooring, and a long happy view of the interior. Really, don't you just want to jump inside this photo and play away the day?

Classic Swimming Pool Tiles - New to our Shop!

We love typography and numbers and are really excited to bring you these classically serifed swimming pool tiles, now available in our shop.

The tiles were originally created as depth markers for a swimming pool, but we think they'll be equally as charming inside your home. Add a quick dash of personality to your home decor with just one tile, or incorporate a few into your next kitchen or bath project (that's what we plan to do!)

Guest House / Garage

Here's 3 views of a detached garage with a guest house on top. I drew most of it this morning during breakfast. There's lots of missing or incomplete details, but it's enough to get the idea.

I didn't put any details into the white garage doors, but you may notice that there are 2 smaller ones at this end, on adjacent walls. This is the bicycle garage. People need to give their bikes as much love as their cars (probably more). With both doors open, you can get bikes out of either side, or just have more daylight when you're working on your awesome bikes.

I like the bench built into the railing outside the double doors. The back follows the curve of the arbor overhead, and hangs over the side, above the small garage door.

If you like this, wait till I finish the main house.

Portrait of a Young Girl

Long before Josh built furniture pieces and living spaces, he painted. Josh doesn't have time to paint much other than drywall these days, and if he did, I wonder what he would paint. A series of home and furniture designs? Many of his paintings now belong to other people, which means I don't have much physical proof that this time in his life existed. In those days, we weren't great at documenting his work. One of my favorite Josh paintings is this portrait of a young girl. Thankfully, this painting lives in the home of Josh's sister, so occasionally I get to see her. The girl's painted image is about three feet tall, and she beams so brightly, it makes my heart ache in a wonderful way. He painted her before we even met, more than ten years ago. It makes me happy to think of him then, creating. He's always creating something. And, quite often his creations cause people to appear as joyful as the young girl in the painting.

This Xmas

My Wife's Father, Richard Zahigian, grew up in and retired from the grocery business. He began at the family store, Zahigian's Market, in what is now Easton, California. In the 70's the business was sold, and eventually became The Big Potato Market, at the same location.
While in college, Richard took a course in drawing and graphic design. He had aspirations to be a draftsman or designer, perhaps in the auto industry. Unfortunately these dreams were derailed by the demands of his father and the family business. Judging by his great success in the grocery business, it seems he may have chosen the right path.
However, a couple of years ago Richard brought out a grocery bag from Zahigians market, and mentioned that he had drawn the original design. I was quite impressed with the drawing, not only because of the quality of the rendering, but also because I'd never seen the application of his skill as a designer.
Recently I scanned his original design and applied it to a grocery bag I modified in Photoshop. Jen and I surprised her family this Xmas with these T-shirts we had printed.

Pictured below is Luke, currently the youngest Zahigian.

The GARDEN RAILROAD
As some of you may know, one of my hobbies is model railroading.

This is the newest addition to the garden railroad. It's a small European style inn, about 24 inches high.

Since I can never leave well enough alone, I modified it with these solar lights that are meant to be mounted on stair treads. They're discrete, to scale (sort-of), and were only $10 for the four lights.

The Legend Olaf Sunderson

Happy Holidays. A lot going on, but not much to say. A lot of driving.
This will be one of the last Airstream postings. The project is done. It will be officially unveiled and photographed on January 7th, in Fresno California, during Art Hop, the monthly art tour. After that, I'll post the photos, and video (it has action).
Until then, here's one last story for anybody restoring an Airstream:

I changed some of the plumbing around. Lost the kitchen sink, and swapped out the 5 gallon propane hot water heater for an electric tankless. I wanted to simplify things. All of the plumbing is tied together with flexible copper tubing. Not a problem. Got out my torch and box of fittings and went to work. But wait...these fittings don't fit. I didn't feel like going to the plumbing supply house, so I moved on to something else.
The following morning, on my way into the East Bay, I stopped at Moran Supply.

MORAN SUPPLY

"I'm having trouble with this tubing," I said, as I passed a small piece across the counter. "It doesn't seem to work with my fittings. I'm not sure what size it is."
"That's 1/2 inch" said the man behind the counter.
"Naw..I don't it is."
"No, that's 1/2," he repeated, in the all-too-typical condescending voice of "The Counter Guy".

Allow me to digress for a moment. I don't know why this happens. Maybe it's from years of having to explain too many details to too many amateur plumbers (or electricians, hobbyist's, or wherever there are people helping us from behind a counter). Whatever it is, I experience this way too much. A sort of attitude, which, by the tone, distinctly says "I'm smarter than you. That's how I got here, on this side of the counter."
I have a great deal of respect for these guys. I really do. I've seen some of the people that they have to deal with. I'm sure it's not easy. And if there's one thing I know, it's that I don't know much, and I've a lot to learn. But I'm not an idiot. And even if I am, at least give me the chance to prove it before you treat me like one. Anyhow...back to the story...

"Ok, well, can you get me a couple of couplers then?"
He raised his eyebrows and walked away, returning with a handful of 1/2" couplers. "These don't fit. This isn't 1/2 inch pipe," He said, in a tone suggesting I sent him for the wrong thing. "Must be 3/4." He walked away, and back again. "This isn't 3/4 either. I think you got refrigeration tubing. You gotta go to a 'frigeration place."
"Any place you suggest?"
"I don't think there are any more refrigeration suppliers."
"Thanks."

APED

I headed over to APED (Appliance Parts something something), not to be confused with "Apehead", which is how I heard it said the first time, and not in the phone book. This guy was a lot more helpful.
"What'cha got there?"
"You tell me. I think it's refrigeration tubing. It's not regular 1/2 inch pipe, that's for sure."
"No problem. What do you need?"
"Couplers."
"Gotcha. Be right back," and he ducked in back. He returned a minute later, "Nope. Not refrigeration tubing."
"Aw, c'mon. You're kidding me." I said, deflated.
"You sure it's not regular pipe?", he asked.
"Yeah, I'm sure."
"OK. Well....we oughtta be able to make something work." He walked up and down the aisles in the back, picking up the occasional part, and returned with calipers and assorted fittings. He started with the calipers. "Aw man. This is weird. This stuff is 1/2 inch on the ID (Inside Diameter). Everything we got is measured on the OD. I don't have anything that's gonna help you. Sorry man."
"Alright. Thanks anyway." I grabbed my sample pipe and turned to the door.
"Hey! Try Berkeley Plumbing. They've been around forever."
"OK. Thanks!"

BERKELEY PLUMBING

"OK. This isn't 1/2 inch pipe, or 3/4, and it's not refrigeration tubing...so..."
"Well, let's check it out..." He grabbed a tape, measured, then grabbed a box of random fittings." After a few failed attempts at making something fit, he scratched his head. "Hmmm."
"Yeah. Hmmm."
Then he looked up at me with a half smile, "You working on an old house in Berkeley?"
"No. A '68 Airstream."
"A what?"
"A 1968 Airstream travel trailer. You know, the round, silver ones?"
"I guess so. Either way, this guy Olaf...uh, Olaf something. I can't remember his name. Either way, he musta done the original plumbing."
"No, I don't think so. I'm fairly certain it's the original factory plumbing."
"Well, they musta got it from this Olaf guy. He was a plumber here in Berkeley. Worked on a lot of houses around here. After the war, he bought up all the Navy surplus tubing from the shipyards. This is Navy ship pipe. He made a lot of plumbers around here mad, cuz you couldn't follow his work. They musta made this pipe specially for ships, because there's nothing else like it. We used to carry fittings for it, cuz we'd get the occaisonal plumber in here working on a Olaf What's-his-name house. Yeah that's what you got. I'll see if we got any of those old fittings around here."
As he poked around, I continued to rummage thru parts on my side of the counter. I found a dusty rack of assorted compression and flare fittings. "What do you think about flare fittings?"
"That's for gas pipe."
Then I remembered the old hot water heater. It had flare fittings. I never use flare fittings, and didn't really intend to use them to make repairs, so it never crossed my mind on my parts search. I found a 5/8 inch to 7/8 inch gas line adaptor, and amazingly the 5/8 side fit!
"Hey, this 5/8 flare fitting fits!"
"Really? Let's see that." He handled the brass fitting, "Well I'll be...there you go."
"Great. So I need a 5/8 fitting that will go to something I can use."
"If it's not on that rack, we don't have it."
I checked every peg, twice, but it was the only 5/8 flare fitting. Damn. I gathered my sample piece and once again headed for the door.
"Thanks for trying."
"No problem. Good luck with that thing." As the door was about to close behind me I heard the man say, "Olaf something!"

ORCHARD SUPPLY HARDWARE

At least I had a lead. Flare fittings. I felt like a detective. Well, not really.
Orchard Supply Hardware is a great place. I go to EVERY hardware store and lumber yard in and around the greater Bay Area, and for a large chain, you can't beat the service and selection at Orchard. I've still seen people complain because they can't get help, but clearly, they've never been to Home Depot. This sounds like unsolicited advertising, and it is. But it's also self-serving. I want the places I like to stay busy, and stay open. I've seen a lot of good hardware stores shut down since the big box boom. It's a shame. I'd like to say there's no substitution for good service, but clearly, Home Depot's success has proven me wrong.
Sure enough, Orchard had a wide selection of 5/8 brass flare fittings (and a guy to help me find them). Finally. I gathered up an assortment. Then I got a pipe flaring tool, and checked out.
Back at the trailer, I opened my packages. The 5/8 flare fitting fit perfectly! I opened my new flaring tool and...wait...it doesn't work on 5/8 pipe. You're kidding me. It only goes up to 1/2 inch? Aw...
OK. Orchard didn't have it, so I'm gonna have to go to a regular plumbing supply. Cal Steam is close, but they're the worst when it comes to treating me like an idiot, so I go to Ashby Plumbing.

"I need a 5/8 flaring tool."
"5/8?" He shrugged and pursed his lips. "I don't think we have that. Hey Bob! We gotta 5/8 flaring tool?"
Through an open door a voice replied, "Sorry. No such thing." Then Bob came thru the door (Actually, I can't remember the guys name. I'm just using Bob because it sounds right).
"Well then how do I make these flare fittings work?"
"I don't know. People don't use that stuff much. I guess guys just make they're own tool. What are you trying to do?"
Once again, I pulled out the pipe. Bob pulled out a tape. Scratched his head. "Here we go again," I thot.
A smile crossed Bob's face. "You're working on an Olaf Sunderson house. He's a guy that used Navy surplus tubing. Made a lot of plumbers mad."
"Yeah, I heard the story at Berkeley Plumbing."
"We don't see this stuff much anymore."
"Do you have anything that'll work?"
"Yeah. You gotta take a 3/4 male to 1/2 female adaptor, and reverse it, so that you use the inside of the 3/4 instead of the outside. It's not a very common fitting, so they're not cheap."
"I don't care. I'll take half a dozen."
"They don't quite fit though, so when you go to sweat it on (the plumbers term for soldering) you gotta use a lot of solder. There'll be a big gap, and you just gotta fill it up. It's not pretty, but it works."

And it did work. Amazing.

Thanksgiving thru Unique LA

The day after Thanksgiving , we took a look at the site in Fresno where the Airstream will ultimately be parked. Behind me is Vicente Aello, the proud new owner.Afterwards, we drove to San Luis Obispo. We hit a little rain during the drive, which made for an incredible sunset.

We spent the weekend celebrating my nephew Luke's 1st birthday, and the 40th anniversary of my in-laws.

We had several suites, including the "Pick and Shovel" room, which was 2 story, 3 bedroom, 2 baths (with heated toilet), and this living room with this giant red leather couch.

The Madonna Inn is more than worth a stop, even if it's just to take a leak or get a cup of coffee.

The main dining room is always pink, but the special Xmas decor is nuts.

The wood carving on the right is the entrance to the hand carved bar .

On my way to work. Not sure what time it is. Whenever the sun comes up, I guess. I hear about snow in some parts of the country...Last Sunday, instead of blogging, I went to breakfast with my old friend Chris, his Wife Sylvia, and their son Theo, which may or may not be short for Theodore. Leaving the restaurant, we passed by this little yellow schoolhouse in Albany where I saw an old green planter box, which I happened to build. Prior to this it sat in our backyard for a couple of years.

Apartment Therapy! , & Airstream Open House!

Good news. The loft I designed and built in Oakland is featured on Apartment Therapy (.com).

In response to a couple of the comments about the sheetrock and ceilings, I thought I would post a few pics that show the framing in progress.

This was easily the most complex thing I've ever framed. It's basically a series of arched steel trusses, similar to a bridge, joined by ribs. I wish I had a photo looking straight up from the floor. That was one of the coolest views.

Obviously, my drywaller is pretty talented.

In AIRSTREAM news:

There will be an Official Open House for the AIRSTREAM the weekend of December 12-13th, which will correspond with the Berkeley Open Studios. Conveniently enough, the open studios takes place at the Sawtooth Building in Berkeley, which happens to be the same location as our shop and the Airstream.

By the way, this blogging website has changed the way things are entered and formatted, and I can't get it to display images properly. I'm not much of a computer guy, and unfortunately, I feel like the computer does a good job of making work that would otherwise seem impressive look pretty dumb.

This week is a little slow. We're in Ventura looking for our new Southern California shop location.

The new Deluxe Sofa Bed design, which is based on the prototype I built a couple of weeks ago. I personally designed the operating mechanism and think the bed will ultimately be one of the Airstream's highlights.

I've gotten through most of the tedious interior work. The stuff that takes the most time, but is the least interesting (electrical, plumbing, leak repairs, caulking, hole
fixes, riviets, clean-up, etc..). I'm finally well into the fun stuff.

What I was going for, was mid-century Space/RV/TV Sci-Fi. Not the cool part of Sci-Fi, but more like my impression of the kind of graphic design an old guy would do for a NASA office, 1965. Before Star Wars. An era when people thot we'd all be driving flying cars by the year 2000. A little bit Six Million Dollar Man, but in this case, more like Six Hundred Dollar. I also didn't want to use too bold of colors. Something simple, official, clinical and sanitized.

As much as I want to show everyone all that I've accomplished so far, I don't want to reveal too much too quickly. For now, here's a few shots of the sofa-bed prototype, which has been completed since these photos were taken.

Finally, here's a shot of the new door knob. Someone had drilled the lock out of the original one, and I couldn't find replacement parts. $160 later...

Airstream Electrical, and a little polishing

This things taking forever. I'm having a good time though. We don't really have it in the budget to polish the Ambassador, but I had to see what it would look like if we did, so I stuck a guy on the back end with a buffer. It's every bit of the process that people warn about on the websites, and 300 hours seems about right for someone who can work hard. The rest of you might end up spending 500 hours.
Juan was doing fine with the aircraft polishing compound and the equipment we had, but a couple hours into the first day a loud chain smoking hippie came by.
"Flour! You gotta use Flour!"
He spent several emphatic minutes preaching to Juan about the merits of flour, how it would save his tarnished soul. Juan stared blankly at the man, as if he were speaking a foreign language, which of course, he was. Then the man proceeded to take the buffer from Juan and began to work a 2x2 section.
"How do you slow this thing down? Here.... wipe that off."
He grabbed Juan's bicep, squeezing it while looking at me, "You gotta put some muscle into it! This guys strong" he said, as if trying to boost our confidence before the big game. "Just keep going. You guys'll get it!"
He was right. After he left I re-explained to Juan what the man had said, and his results instantly improved. The next day we had some flour, which he told us to put on our rags when wiping off the polishing compound. I guess that worked too.

And the results...

Here's a few electrical changes, such as 110v track lighting.

I modified the original circuitry. I took the four 12v circuits that went to the original "Airstream Control Panel", figured out what went where, and diverted two of the circuits to a new 110v panel. The result was that I had two 12v circuits operating off of the original battery back up, powering the original fans, and a couple of 12v lights, .
Then, with the other 2 circuits now powered by the new 11ov panel, I was able to use the existing in wall Romex to hook up new 110v lights & receptacles, without having to actually re-wire much of anything. The only thing I screwed was leaving the 2 forward 12v sconces on a 110v circuit. Instantly blew the bulbs. I'm hoping I can just wire up a 12v transformer at the sconce and the problem will go away.

I also moved the "Airstream Control Panel", as you can see in this picture, and the one below. I temporarily mounted it on a piece of OSB approximately where it will end up once the new cabinetry is installed.

I added a couple more receptacles using surface mount "Wiremold" above where the new desk will be. When all is said and done, the trailer will have two 12v circuits, six 110v circuits, and one 220v circuit to operate the new electric on-demand water heater. I'll include the schematic I drew up in a future post, just in case it helps any owners of a 1968 Ambassador Twin.

New Item - Picture Frames, $50 each

I had a request for some custom picture frames. The client wanted 40, simple, white box frames. I've had requests from others as well, so I think I'll put together a frame package, based on the same design. I'll have to work out the details, but they'll probably end up around $1000 per 20 custom frames ($50 each), depending on size & finish. It's a lot of labor.

I didn't take any photos during the milling and assembly stages, but here are some assembled Poplar frames, prior to finishing.

1968 Airstream Retrofit Window Installation

Our 1968 Airstream arrived with 4 Jalousie windows that I believe, because of the wooden frame, were not original. They were dilapidated, falling apart, and none of the hardware was operational. After looking into replacement windows for an Airstream I realized we might vastly improve the original single-glazed window with a modern dual-glazed, insulated window. We were lucky because our 1968 Airstream was the last year before Airstream switched to the rounded corner window, thus allowing us to use a modern aluminum frame window designed for a conventional building.
I began by removing the Jalousie window sashes, wooden jamb, and then cut away the aluminum fins all the way around the window. The exterior side at the top had a hinge that ran the width of the window. From the inside I sliced the hinge from end-to-end, removing the articulated half that attached to the glass. I used a Dremel tool at the ends where the corners were too tight for my grinder to fit. I left the remaining piece of the exterior hinge in place which served as a typical Z-bar or window flashing.

I used a file to clean up the edges; an easy task with the relatively soft aluminum.

Here's a step I should've photographed more thoroughly. Because the new window was 3/4" thicker than the original I had to attach an additional piece of aluminum to the window where it would protrude inside past the original frame. I used a piece of 1" x 1/4" channel, cut to the window height, and attached it with rivets, in keeping with the original Airstream assembly techniques.

After removing the sash from the new window, I insert the frame. I had measured it close enough that the frame fit snugly with just enough room for minor corrections if the rough opening (which wasn't really rough) was out of square. I removed the top screw on the jamb side of the awning hardware.

I drilled through the hole where the original screw was through to the original window frame. I can't remember what size drill bit I used, but it was big enough for a #8 screw to thread into tightly. Check out my huge Popeye forearm.

I replaced the original small screw with a #8 x 1" Stainless Steel screw that went through the new window jamb and into the original frame. I did this on both sides, at the highest and lowest screws on the awning hardware.

Near the bottom of the window I drilled another hole for the #8 screw.

By the way: I wouldn't bother trying to level the window as you would in a typical house installation, since the trailer itself may not be level. However, I would try to make it square. Also, you may want to put a couple of additional screws at the top, but they need to be much longer, because there is a larger space between the new and existing frames. Do not put screws in the bottom, as this increases your chances for leaks. The weight of the sash hangs on the side frames. The top and bottom bare no weight.

I can't remember exactly what caulking I used, but it is from the Sonoplast family. I used the aluminum color, of course. I caulked the entire perimeter, leaving a small weep hole at the bottom left and right corners (which, because of the angled wall, may not work).

The tape has been carefully removed while the caulking is still a little wet (after about 1/2 hour). A beautiful, insulated, dual-glazed window with modern awning hardware, that works great!

The window is an IWC 21-1/4" x 39" Aluminum Block Frame Dual Glazed Low-E Glass Awning Window, approx $300 plus installation.

I finally started rendering the 1968 Airstream. Kind of complicated as rendering shapes goes.
Didn't get to the bathroom yet, and may not, since it probably won't change.

Here you can see the rear left side (on the right) which includes a small closet, and bench/shelf that covers the left wheel well.

Above is the rear right side (left). At the front is a seat, or shelf, which covers the existing wheel well. Moving towards the back we see 3 curved shelves, 3 drawers, a desk area, and fridge.

Here's a couple of walnut nightstands in progress. Designed to match a bedroom set from the 40's or 50's. Not really sure when they were built. Some details were included, such as the leg taper and fluting, while other details were changed, like making them 3 legged, and adding a drawer at the bottom where there would have been nothing. Should be done on Monday.

Day 13, July 26th, Moon Germs

After returning home, and a day off, Jen, Vince & I took a field trip to the USS Hornet, at the old Navy Base, in Alameda. Just a 5 minute drive from our home, the USS Hornet was celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing. We missed the Saturday event with Dr. Buzz Aldrin (I wish I could be called "Dr. Buzz") but still had a great time. It was my 3rd visit, but this trip had new meaning. Besides the other important chapters in the ship's history, the Hornet had the honor of picking up the astronauts after they returned from the moon, and splashed down in the ocean. Upon their return to Earth, the astronauts were quarantined for 21 days, for fear of spreading "moon germs", in a custom built 1968 Airstream, the same year as ours. Fascinating. It was great to see how similar the amenities were in the Airstream Mobile Quarantine Facility. Same sink, cabinets, curtains, & toilet, plus a few things we didn't have, like the airplane seats and conference table. Pretty cool.
After we returned home we listened to the 1972 CTI recording, Joe Farrell's "Moon Germs"; a quartet featuring heavy hitters Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke, and Jack Dejohnette. You know that's good.

Before we left on our Airstream trip, we went to a BBQ over at the Linden St. Brewery, here in the neighborhood. As we were sitting around talking, this design came to me. I quickly sketched it out, and the next day started this model. It took several hours to complete, and is 1/5 scale. It is made from mahogany, poplar, and walnut ply that I found lying around the shop. Clear lacquer finish.

A few Bay Area residents have expressed an interest in seeing how the Airstream project evolves. In general, when I'm in work mode, I'm not very social. For those of you who know how to get things done, you know it's the name of the game. Never-the-less, everyone needs a break some time. Without directly divulging the location of the Airstream, I'll invite anyone to stop by and take a look or say "Hi". If you plan on staying more than 3 minutes, make it late in the day, and have a couple extra beers with you. Otherwise, we may have some kind of open house at the end of the deal. Also realize that this isn't going to be a restoration, so much as a re-model. When it's done, it will be a fairly simple office/ studio, and may not end up that interesting. Don't get me wrong; it'll be done well.

4 Corners, Monument Valley, Flagstaff

There are several ways to get from Santa Fe to Berkeley. All of them are beautiful, but none of them are very direct. Since no direction seemed particularly efficient, I decided to travel at least some of the way through places I'd never seen. High on my list was Monument Valley Arizona.
No matter how many amazing photos we took, none of them could do this place justice. Words can't either, so I won't bother, but it's obvious when driving through why Monument Valley has been chosen as the backdrop for so many Western films as well as the surface of many a distant planet. Is that Commander Pike?

I had a little trouble getting the electrical hooked up from my truck to the trailer. My truck, which previously belonged to PG&E, had a commercial tow hook-up. After changing it to a more common tow plug, I still had no brakes or brake lights on the trailer. I ran some wire from my truck, through the Airstream, and out the back window to operate some temporary brake lights, which would get me out of Las Vegas.
We got to Santa Fe, and I found Hal Burns RV repair. The guy who seemed to be running the place was a little crotchety, and I felt pretty confident he'd just as soon see us drive off a cliff as get help with our trailer brakes. Never-the-less, we arrived early enough that he was able to put Bill, his lead mechanic, on the job.
Bill was kind, sympathetic, and eager to see us up and running. He had things figured out in no time, so we had him check the trailer brakes and bearings while we were there. Once again, everything looked great (though Bill through a little extra grease on the bearings, just for good measure).
We spent a little time in Santa Fe since we'd never been there before, but eventually headed Northwest, through Los Alamos, and eventually landed in Farmington, New Mexico. The trailer handled beautifully the whole way, and the drive was amazing. Everyday since the trip began, we've experienced brief thunderstorms. This made for great temperatures for travelling through the desert, and the most incredible skies and sunsets I've ever seen. By the way, if you ever need a room in Farmington New Mexico, call ahead to make sure that the National High School Rodeo Finals are not in progress. If they are, you may want an Airstream because there may not be any rooms available.

Still in Las Vegas

It took a couple of days to leave town, but I had allowed for plenty of delays. Las Vegas, New Mexico is a beautiful and fascinating place, so I didn't mind hanging around a while.
Prior to our arrival, I had never met Butch, an Austin transplant and previous owner of the Airstream, who currently had the trailer parked in his backyard. "He's good people", Chris told me. Chris was right. Butch was a great guy, who did everything to help and facilitate our project, and to get this Airstream out of his hair. Being that I'd never met Butch, I was reluctant to get him involved in what I considered our mess, but I took what help he gave.
The first real work day was a matter of cleaning things up. I was hoping that after a thorough cleaning we would not only see what we were dealing with, but we might actually have a place to sleep on the way home. With the exception of torn upholstery and some pretty serious fridge funk, this thing was in terrific shape! Everything seemed to be fully functional, including the lights, fans, original radio, water pump, and everything else we checked out. It even had a full charge on the battery, which was amazing since this thing hadn't seen any use in years.
The only thing that really needed attention were the jalousie windows, which had the operational hardware removed at some point. For the trip home we taped them up with stucco tape (a tape I've found more useful than duct), and added a piece of plexi over the front window which was glass and seemed vulnerable to flying rocks. Vince added the red cross with the stucco tape, perhaps to signify the care and mercy the trailer would receive.

Leaving Las Vegas, Airstream in Tow

Vince's Airstream is looking good, and this morning we're leaving Las Vegas, New Mexico, and driving to Santa Fe.

If you're a fan of "No Country for Old Men" you may recognize the Motel in the background. We stayed there last night, three doors down from the room featured in the shootout scene.

Vince's Airstream

The history of this project, the people involved, and how it came to be is too much to explain, but in brief: Chris (who's in Austin) gave Vince (vicenteaello.com) this 1968 Airstream Ambassador, which is located in Las Vegas, New Mexico, in Butch's backyard. Chris asked if I could turn this thing into something, and enlisted me in the task of picking it up and taking back to California. There I'll be parking it at the shop in Berkeley, and Vince & I will tear it apart and put it back together in some kind of new configuration. Eventually the Airstream will end up back in Fresno California as Vince's new office/studio.
The voyage began a few days ago in California with my spouse Jennifer (jenzahigian.com) and Vince. We're here in Las Vegas now, getting things together, and ready for the trip back home. A couple of years ago I built this Doll Head Gate, as a unique installation of motion-sensor lighting. The doll faces and sculpted ornamentation include wired electrical so that the eyes light up when motion is detected.

Here's the story...

My friend Bob did not have a fence separating the front from the back yard. Consequently, people began to help themselves to bicycles and other fun stuff kept around back. At the same time, my cousin across town had torn down a patio cover, and had salvaged the beams, and a few joists. It was also the month of "Neighborhood Clean-up", a city funded program where one throws this years junk in the street and the City hauls it away. That's where the gates came from. And the baby heads? Huge bins of baby heads at Berkeley Re-Use. It was my first time there. Got some cool X-Ray's too.

The basic structure of the archway was easy. I put more effort into the heads. The back of each head was carefully removed, and the face was mounted to a plaque, in the spirit of a big game trophy. I tried to mount each head according to it's position on the horizontal beam so that each would be looking at a pedestrian coming up the center of the drive. This was important because the eyes of each head are lit and triggered by a motion detector.

I spent a little time enhancing some of the heads in other ways. I created a "ring-leader baby head" with handlebar mustache and top hat (made from a frosting container), and a "Baby T", with mohawk and side-burns (no mustache). Everything was finished with flat white for that shabby-chic touch of elegance.

I design or build something just about every day. I am a member of Heartwood, a Cooperative Woodshop in Berkeley, California, that has been around for more than thirty years.
